• Samsung Kies is a Drivers and Mobile Phones application like Identifier, SideSync, and Driver Updater from Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. It has a simple and basic user interface, and most importantly, it is free to download. Samsung Kies is an efficient software that is recommended by many Windows PC users.
• A restart of Kies then informed me that the device now being Android 4.4.2 was no longer supported by Kiers and prompted me to download and install Smart Switch, via a handy link. This was done as per on-screen instructions and both the Note and the S6 were connected and perfectly backed-up via Smart.

Samsung has released new software to replace Kies, named Samsung Smart Switch, which is mainly directed at migrating customers onto new Samsung devices. The name K.I.E.S. Originated as an acronym for 'Key Intuitive Easy System'. After version 2.0, the name was shortened to 'Kies'.

Samsung Kies/ˈkiːz/^[1] is a freewaresoftware application used to communicate between Windows or Macintosh operating systems, and more recently manufactured Samsungmobile phone and tablet computer devices, usually using a USB connection (though wireless LAN Kies connectivity is now possible using some devices). Samsung has released new software to replace Kies, named Samsung Smart Switch, which is mainly directed at migrating customers onto new Samsung devices. Kies is available in several versions and editions, depending on the specific Samsung device and the OS it is running. Kies (currently in version 2.6.4.20043_5) supports devices with Android 2.1 through 4.2. Kies3 (version 3.x) supports devices with Android Jelly Bean (4.3 and up). Trying to use Kies with newer devices, or Kies3 with older devices, will result in an error message.^[2]

There is also a Kies Mini version, which is available only for specific devices such as Samsung Captivate, Infuse, or Vibrant.^[3] It is used to update these devices' operating systems (OS versions). Though there are both Windows and Mac(intosh) versions of the full Kies product,^[4] there is only a Windows version of Kies Mini for most Samsung devices; however, non-Windows users may overcome this limitation by using a Windows virtual machine, installing Kies Mini within it and connecting a Samsung device via USB cable to accomplish the OS update.^{[citation needed]}. On Windows devices, the file transfer happens via a plug-and-play mode.^[5]Note that since 2012, Intel processors mounted the Cache Acceleration Software, which was tuned by system administrators when connected with SSD cards.

Although Kies connectivity has traditionally been via mini or micro-USB cable (needing of some software, and not plug and play), wireless LAN connectivity between a Samsung device on which the Kies Wireless Android app^[6] is running, and any Windows or Macintosh computer running the Kies full version, is now also possible. The Kies Wireless app also supports wireless connectivity with other devices via said other devices' web browsers. All such connectivity, though, must be via a local Wi-Fi connection (and not via cellular2G, 3G, or 4G data networks) wherein all involved devices are on the same Wi-Fi LAN.^[7]

The full version of Kies may be downloaded from the Samsung Global Download Center^[8] or from the download part of an individual mobile device's technical support web page on the Samsung website. With few exceptions, it is usually only the Kies Mini version, and not the full version, which is typically downloadable from a given Samsung device.

Smart Switch is part of a technical and commercial strategy finalized to connect all electronics in a unique semi-automation system, which is managed via a smartphone central app of Samsung.^[9]

Although lockstep, simple and oldest Trivial File Transfer Protocol was optimized for a client-server network, far different from a one-to-one and peer-to-peer connection.

Android File Transfer for Linux is a FOSS app, stable since version 2.2.,^[10] though FOSS has somewhere (e.g. on GitHub) protected under the copyright law, and subject to file robots.txt mirroring exclusions.

As we have got familiar with using Samsung Smart Switch to transfer the phone data with freedom, actually lots of older Samsung users tend to use Samsung Kies to manage their phone files. Compared with Smart Switch, Kies is just developed as a software on the computer or Mac but it still plays significant role in data management which brings much convenience to the Samsung users. Now, let us go to check whether it deserves to use or whether to apply Smart Switch is much better.

Part 1. What is Samsung Kies?

As the name shows, Samsung Kies merely serves for Samsung cellphones or tablets and it majors in data management and system update. In fact, there are three versions of Kies: Kies 3; Kies 2.6 and Kies for Mac. Nowadays, most users should launch Kies 3 for it is suitable for some of those devices running Android 4.3 or later, while the 2.6 version can support 4.3 or older. Part 2. How to Manage Samsung Mobile?

Before using Kies, you may be confused about how to connect device with Kies. Two approaches are given: via USB cable and via Wi-Fi which is a little hard to operate so it is suggested that the first way should be used. Then, we can back up and restore data on Samsung device or sync the files.In the following tips, the tips of management will be presented.

Tips 1. Add Files into Library

No matter you connected the phone to PC or just opened the program, the left side lists the data in the library of Kies and the data of device. When we need to add some data into the library, click 'Music' button under the 'Library' and go on to click the plus button to add the files, such as songs, from the computer. After you have viewed those songs are in the music library, you can move them to certain playlist as you like.

Tips 2. Sync Music, Photos and Videos Between Samsung and Library

Launch Samsung Kies on the PC and click to run it. If you have connected your phone to the computer, you will view an interface with info of the device. Move the mouse on 'Sync' option next to 'Basic information'. Then tick the box in front of the data type, like 'Sync music' and press the 'Sync' button on the right top side. That is how to get the multimedia synced so that your Galaxy and Kies have the same files.

Tips 3. Update the Firmware of Samsung

When you enter the homepage of Kies, you can see the basic information and click 'Firmware Upgrade' to continue. The pop-up will ask you to confirm to start upgrade with ticking checkbox of 'I have read all of above information'.

Next, as what you update system on the device, Kies will download the firmware automatically and it will get into upgrading as the processing bar shows to you until it goes to 100%.

Part 3. Things Kies Cannot Do for Us

Every coin has both side. So does Samsung Kies. It works for data management with ease but it still cannot work out some problems as following:1. Kies cannot be practical in transferring data between two devices even though it has Kies Air which is hard to connect with another device's Air app.2. Kies is unable to support other phone models in managing data.3. Kies doesn't allow users to organize other data except photos, videos, music, contacts.4. The latest Kies seems to lag behind, compared with the earlier version, in some extents so it undermines users' confidence.
